Overview
Pulseboard sells analytics to e-commerce teams, but their own dashboard was slow, cluttered, and intimidating to the non-technical founders who actually signed the checks. Trial users bounced before they ever saw an insight.
We rebuilt the product around one principle: any merchant should understand their numbers in under a minute. Custom chart builder, real-time data, and alerts, wrapped in an interface that feels obvious, loading in under a second.
The challenge
- 01
Dashboards took 6+ seconds to load, trial users assumed the product was broken and left.
- 02
The interface was built for analysts, but buyers were founders who wanted answers, not query builders.
- 03
Every new chart type required engineering time, the product couldn't keep up with customer requests.
- 04
'Where do I click?' was the most common support ticket about reporting.
Approach
How we got there.
No magic, just a disciplined process, applied with care at every step.
Step 1
Speed as a feature
Re-architected data fetching with aggressive caching and progressive loading, median dashboard load dropped from 6.2s to 0.9s.
Step 2
Answers, not queries
Redesigned around pre-built insight cards for the metrics merchants actually check daily, with drill-downs for the curious.
Step 3
Charts without code
A drag-and-drop chart builder lets users create custom views in seconds, new visualizations ship without engineering tickets.
Step 4
Alerts that matter
Threshold and anomaly alerts push to email and Slack, so teams hear about problems before their customers do.
The outcome
0.9s avg. load · 12k daily users
“Our merchants finally understand their own numbers. Trial-to-paid conversion jumped the month the new dashboard shipped, speed and clarity sold it.”
- 12k daily active users
- 4.6/5 usability score in user testing
- 60% fewer 'how do I…?' support tickets
